FLOOD RESCUE
On July 28, 2022, a devastating flood demolished Southeastern Kentucky and our hometown in Letcher County. Immediately, we emptied the building and started taking in flood rescues as they arrived. We did not charge for these pets to stay with us and we continued to care for them while their families look for housing and stability.
During this time we have also gave out dog and cat food. We knew that even for folks who had safe shelter and their pets with them, food was still a critical concern. Donations from companies and individuals came in, and we sent them right back out to our area. At times, that meant delivering food by ATV to far flung areas. Area groups came in to volunteer with us and spent time sort donations, making deliveries, and interacting with the animals to keep everyone as calm and happy as possible.
For nearly 3 months, we served in the role of a non-profit shelter and pet food pantry, putting all of our income-earning activities on pause while we answered the needs we saw as we could. From this effort, the Appalachian Pet Pantry, Non Profit was born. Now we are happy to offer our community help in feeding and spay/neutering their pets. Taking steps together
We are proud of our staff, community, and friends who came together to support one another. Tara and Baileigh talk about what the experience was like during the flood and the recovery efforts, some of which are still on going.
New Beginnings
While we are proud of how our community came together to support each other and our area critters, this also highlighted many gaps that exist all the time.
We've now created the Appalachian Pet Pantry. Our mission is to help pets stay with their families by providing pet supplies, education, vaccination and spay & neuter info.
This is a new non-profit that we are building. To help us, you can follow our Facebook page, and donate to support these causes. Visit www.AppPetPantry.Org to learn more about how we are changing our future of animal care here in the mountains!
